Sunny Patches BOM: Sunny Greek Square Block

Hip, Hip Hooray!…it’s time for the next block in the Sunny Patches BOM.  It’s always fun when it’s a block release day during a block of the month!

If you are new to the Sunny Patches Block of the month, you will find the fabric requirements here, an introduction post here, and the 1st block here.

For this month, we are making 1 Sunny Greek Square block.

This is a simple to piece block and I’ll think you will enjoy making it!

You can download the Sunny Greek Square block here.

I have also filmed a Sunny Greek Square block tutorial on my YouTube channel.

You can find the tutorial video here.

The fabrics I’ve used for my blocks are Beautiful Day (Red/Green) and Sunwashed (Red/Blue).  If you are not participating in the BOM (although it’s never too late to join in!) you might like to make the Sunny Greek Square block on it’s own.  I mocked up how the block looks on it’s own within a quilt using Sunwashed fabrics.  This would be a simple quilt to make!

Since so many of us are in a scrapbusting, use-from-our stash frame of mind right now, I also mocked up a very scrappy version.  For this option, I skipped the outside border of the block and set the blocks on point.  This would be a wonderful scrap-busting quilt!  I would go even scrappier than what my mock-up shows.  I just didn’t want to take the time to color each little individual patch.  I think it still gives you a great idea of the possibilities!

I hope you have so much fun sewing up your Sunny Greek Square quilt block!  If you are not yet subscribed to the Coriander Quilts YouTube channel, I’d love to have you!  We also have a Coriander Quilts Facebook group where we can share our Coriander Quilts projects.  Feel free to request to join if you’d like!

Have a wonderful weekend! Corey

I love the super scrappy version. Will you be releasing it as a full pattern? I am worried my Christmas stash will outlive me and this pattern might end my worries!

  2. Marie Mangus says:

Would love a pattern for the super scrappy version to use up some of the strips I mindlessly cut.

    • Corey says:

If you just need the block pattern, you could use the same PDF and take off the borders. You might opt not to strip piece that one section and instead substitute multiple prints.

My goodness! The scrappy versions are gorgeous! I had to enlarge the image of the last one to really understand what you did there. I love all the options and being a beginner, I especially love how easy it is to follow your instruction. You make it all seem doable and super FUN!

Love the super scrappy version, but it took me awhile to realize it was a “version” of the greek key block! I was looking around to find out the name of the second quilt in your post and had to look at it closely to see that it was that block in repeat. Love scrappy quilts and this one is beautiful.

THE SCRAPPY VERSION ON POINT IS GREAT! A PATTERN WOULD BE WONDERFUL!

  6. Thank you so much for creating this quilt along and for sharing supplemental ideas for using the blocks. I’m grateful for your willingness to share your talents so generously!

  7. Mildred Plaskett says:

Thank you for the free pattern, clear instructions, and tutorials. I enjoy all your videos.

  8. Jill says:

Thank you, Corey!I’m a newbie, and I absolutely love the scrappy one. I might even attempt it. 😉

  9. Judy Blinkenbergpp look says:

    Thank you Corey!!

  10. Cindy says:

I also love the scrappy version and hope you consider writing up a pattern for that. I sure enjoy your videos, Corey!

  11. Julie Blazek says:

I also love the scrappy mock-up! It’s a great option doing it on point rather than just the regular rows of scrappy 2.5″ squares you see so often. I LOVE the look of blocks set on point with the large triangle “frame” around it to really make it pop. I hope that makes sense. LOL! I would be very interested in a full version pattern if you do decide to release it as a paid or free pattern. You’re always so generous with so many free BOM sew along patterns that I would be more than willing to even pay for the scrappy pattern if needed!!
My Beautiful Day mystery BOM from last year is at the quilters as I type this. She said it should be finished THIS WEEK!!! EEEEKKKK!!!! I’m SO excited to see it!!!
I love everything you create and look forward to all your videos, Corey! Keep doing what you’re doing so well! I’m a lifer!!!

    • Corey says:

I’m so happy to have you following along Julie! Isn’t that scrappy version so pretty….those triangles add such a nice contrasting border. =) I hope you love your Beautiful Day quilt when it gets back from your quilter. I have mine on our bed right now and it’s fun to enjoy it—it also makes fixing the bed every morning much more enjoyable LOL! =)

I’m so sorry to hear of your accident with your ankle. Hope you are doing better and feeling good. I haven’t kept up with you either because of my health issues, so I’m wondering if the next block has been given to us.If it has how do I find it? I love your site and hope to be able to start sewing on the first block soon. Thank you so much for your quilting site and your knowledge and talent that you share with us.

    • Corey says:

I didn’t have an accident with my ankle but I think you for the well wishes. =) This is the second block that I have shared for this sew along. The first block was shared on the 3rd Saturday of March.

  13. Hallie Rice says:

Hi, Corey — I asked this question to the Facebook group, but it ended up at the bottom of the page so got “lost”. Do you think I could resize the blocks to 8″ or 10″ so I could hang it? I’m not sure I’ll resize it since I’ve already made the first blocks and I’d be wasting a lot of fabric if I cut them down, but it might be more useful for me.

    • Corey says:

You can always resize quilt blocks, especially if you are comfortable with quilt match and how re-sizing works. Depending on the original block, you might be looking at unusual measurements…3/8″, 5/8″, 7/8″s etc. but you could probably eliminate some of those odd measurements by adjusting the width of your border.

  14. Jeanne says:

Will each of the blocks that are bordered us the same fabric for the border? Planning ahead to be sure I have enough fabric if so. Thanks!! Loving this sew along!!!!

  15. Betty Barringer says:

Corey, any chance of getting the name of the design that the Wooly stars quilt was quilted with? Tried to find your quilters info but was unable to find her info! I have that one to quilt.
    Thanks Betty
