Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume 7: Framed Quilt Block
It’s that time of year again!–Time for the Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks blog tour. =) This magazine is such a wealth of great block designs and I am excited to have a block featured. It even made the cover–can you guess which one it is?
As many of you know the whole quilt/block design process is my favorite part of making a quilt–it ranks right up there with my love of fabric. This block came to be after a fun time playing in EQ7–it combines traditional patchwork with a slightly modern spin. The solids contribute to a modern feel–they are a mix of Moda Bella Solids and Cross Weaves, Robert Kaufman Kona Solids, and maybe a Free Spirit Solid or two).
The instructions for my block, Block #700, can be found on page 71 in the Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume 7 which hits stores next week.
This block is pretty cool used just by itself in a quilt–here it is in Marmalade by Bonnie and Camille for Moda:
But, it’s even niftier when used with a 2nd block–Here I’ve used a 2nd block and Folk Tale Fabric by Natalie Lymer for Lecien Fabrics.

clean, clear modern style appeals to me most of all. I greatly admire complex traditional but I like to finish a quilt in a couple of weeks rather than a couple of years!

I love the look of traditional, pieced quilts with old-fashioned patterns! To me, these are the comforting, snuggly kinds of quilts, and the wrinklier they are the better!! Who couldn’t fell good wrapped in one of those!! I really like your block in the first setting! Makes its own frames for each block! Marmalade is my current favorite fabric line, too! Congratulations on having your block chosen! Volume 7 is promising to be the very best one yet!
I prefer modern usually. But I am loving applique and crazy quilts a ton right now.

I like what I call updated traditional. A mix of modern and traditional, I guess. I liked your block when I saw it by itself, but I LOVED it when I saw it combined with others. Very cool.
New to the world of quilting, I am still piecing. I have my eye on applique, though, and feel that soon I will stretch out and actually try it!

I love, love, love paper piecing patterns. I’m more of a Modern quilter in the fact I enjoy making up my patterns as I go. Most of the time, I have an idea and than just go for it. My favorite patterns are the ones with white background fabric, like your block.
I’m basically a traditionalist (I do a lot of handpiecing) and I’m just getting into applique, but I’ve been looking at a lot of the modern quilts lately and they definitely have an appeal! This is a great block with a lot of versatility!

I usually like the traditional patterns but I also have made some more modern quilts. I love the looks of the hand applique but have not had a chance to try that yet.
The quilts I love to make depend on the person I am making it for…the time of the year… the season….and what phase the moon is in… 🙂
I like “modern vintage”, using new fabrics with block patterns. Though I am trying my hand at a little improv. LOVE your block with the new Avalon fabric!

I guess I would be considered a traditional quilter with somewhat modern edge – depends on the fabric chosen for quilt. Love the clean look of modern but also the muted tones of antiques. That is why I love table runners because I can make them in many ways quickly.

I guess I would claim to be a traditional quilter but increasingly, ‘modern’ fabric lines and colours are finding their way into my stash and I am experimenting with fusible applique. It’s hard to resist trying new approaches.

One great thing about this issue and the blog tour is I’m finding a lot of great blocks that are suitable for scraps. The block set straight looks like it would give a scrappy mix a lot of visual punch set against a common background. But I also like that you’ve shown how versatile the block can be in two block settings.
I tend toward traditional, have a newly acquired love of applique but also have been slowly tiptoeing toward doing some modern work. With quilting I say never say never!

I love applique. Currently appliqueing an entire quilt top.
It is hard to choose a favorite but I think I like traditional but I am coming around to liking the modern quilts. I started by making quilts with embroidery, I am having my Birdie Stitches quilt quilted and hope to get it back soon.
I prefer traditional with a modern twist. Sometimes the fabric choice can achieve this.

I love most everything in quilting, especially blocks and quilts with bright colors and few triangles. I like quilts that make you eye move about the quilt looking for the colors and the design. I tend to appreciate traditional blocks, either pieced or applique. However, recently I’ve been reading books by Modern quilters and am coming around to that style as well.

table runner with applique in two blocks and each corner. Yes, I am most
comfortable with traditional piecing.
I usually do traditional blocks but the modern look is growing on me.
I love doing appliques the most….but what I think is cool is taking a quilt block and adding an applique to the center of it…patchlique…..Have a great QM vol 7 day and thanks for the quilt block….
Traditional is my current style, but I’m fairly new at quilting, so who knows where I’ll go next.
I am a traditional type of gal – but I do like playing with colors and fabrics to push the envelope a little. But, definitely give me piecework over applique any day!

I really am attracted to the old patterns, especially the ones published in the Kansas City Star. But I am into modern piecing these by machine or paper piecing the blocks. So look at the old but bring in the new.

I prefer making traditional quilts. The math teacher in me loves squares, triangles, rectangles, half-rectangles. I was once inspired by a trapezoid table to design a quilt.

Like other’s here, I am increasingly being wooed over to more modern fabrics to use on traditional patterns……just not enough time in my life to do justice to all the wonderful changes going on with quilting….:)

Oh boy, I think it depends on what day it is as to what quilt type I prefer! I love what I love but I tend to be drawn more toward applique. Your block is wonderful & you have the luck of the sevens.. Volume 7, block 700, page 71…how neat is that!!! Thanks for a chance at the give-away!
Modern or traditional, I love them both. I really like the look of applique quilts but so far do mostly pieced quilts. Thanks for showing so many options for your blocks; I think the Fig Tree quilts example is especially striking.

OMG! I love this block. I generally do traditional piecing but love to play with techniques. This block reminded me I have a stack of nine patches that would look fabulous in your settings.

Truly, I just LOVE all quilts. Modern seemed a bit ‘off’ to me for awhile but lately I’m really liking them lots. The quilt made up in Avalon was very neat but I love the solids the best.
I like traditional pieced blocks with contemporary prints and colors.
I really like the traditional stuff, you know, like t-shirt quilts made with well-loved t-shirts.
After browsing your website, I certainly have the “itch” to do a modern quilt, otherwise I do mostly traditional. Keep up the great blocks.
I enjoy each technique and then depending on fabric choices a modern block can look traditional and a traditional block can appear modern.

I love traditional blocks made up with modern fabrics, and set in on traditional ways. Seems like true art to take the best from the past and change it up to be fresh and new.
My favorite blocks would have to be traditionally pieced, but with a modern twist. Just love the more modern fabrics, from large scale prints to solids. Of course it’s difficult to really choose, because I seriously LOVE IT ALL! But I personally am more comfy making the traditional blocks.
Right now I am favoring applique quilts. But I know I will soon start favoring another style.

I like your block a lot and love seeing it made up so many different ways and with a variety of fabrics. A great block is one that can be done this way.
I love traditional quilts but feel I’ve pretty much done them all. I’ve branched into art quilts and am now making modern quilts for my 20-something kids! I love them ALL!

Anything pieced is good for me, I’m not a fan of applique in the traditional sense. I quite like the glue stick method though and reverse appliqué.

I usually go for traditional quilting. I do belong to a stitch group. We all get together and applique – we are all at different levels of mastery. I haven’t finished an applique project, YET! The block is amazing and certainly looks different in different fabrics. I love Fig Tree’s Avalon and it is a great marriage with the block. Congrats on being aceepted into a great publication.

I lean toward modern, but I’m so new to quilting. The little applique that I’ve done was very enjoyable – surprisingly so. But I prefer the simple and clean look of modern quilts.

I’m glad I’m not too late to enter! I love any quilt that inspires me. I tend to actually finish modern improv quilts, but I love making traditional blocks too. I’ll have a sampler someday.

Traditional has been a really good place to start obtaining basic skills and techniques but modern stretches me and it’s exciting so there is a foot in both camps. Your block is beautiful and versatile I would enjoy playing with it Thank-you for everything.
