Hand Quilting Video Part 2 of 4

Happy Saturday and welcome to the second video in my 4 part series on big stitch hand quilting.

This morning, I released my second video in a 4 part series I am sharing on hand quilting over on my YouTube channel.  You can find the video here.

Pretty hand quilting

If you missed the first video in the series, I shared a bit about my hand quilting background as well as a hand quilted quilts trunk show.  You can find that video here.

And lastly, I have put together a hand quilting supply checklist with the supplies I mentioned in my video today.  This way, you can grab your list and do a little supply shopping easily.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but I will this evening! I looked at the supply list, and I’m curious why you don’t recommend 100% cotton batting. Also, have you ever tried bamboo batting?

    • Corey says:

100% cotton battings will sometimes have “fiber balls” (that’s my own wording) than can be difficult to push a needle through should it hit at the wrong spot. I don’t know that you’d notice it on a small project but you might on a larger project. That being said, there are hand quilters who really like 100% cotton batting. I haven’t personally tried bamboo batting for hand quilting although I hear it is quite nice.

Hello Corey! I am very new to you and between novice and intermediate in quilting! I have been very despondent about quilting and set it aside, mad at the world! YET! I fell in love w/Fly Away and ordered the quilt pattern through the Berlin shop, Helping Hands. So, I donlt know if I can do it, but I tried a “bird unit” w/stash according to your pattern directions. Are you going to do a tutorial on YouTube? I am SOO in love w/pattern and material, but I question my skills and hesitate buying that scrumptious fabric to maybe not have it happen like yours! What do you say?

I understand your Mothers hesitation about machine quilting. I was absolutely a lover of fabrics and used them for a wide variety of crafting projects from garment making to crafts in the 70’s through the 80’s. Then a girl I had met upon moving to Missouri was having her grandmother make a log cabin design quilt for herself and she would have it machine quilted. I was a little bit horrified as the only quilting I had ever seen was my mom’s or grandma’s hand quilting. To me a quilt wasn’t truly a quilt unless it was hand quilted. Well, I got the notion to make an effort towards making a quilt top in about 1989. Purchased the book and fabric and never used either. But I did acquire a true love of quilts and discovered hand quilting was far too intense and time consuming and therefore machine quilting has become my “go to” for finishing, done professionally . I love making the top and doing the binding. You have given me the curiosity to give it a try again. I have done and do enjoy small hand quilting projects at this time. Your videos are fabulous.

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
