Round 4 Moda Block Heads, Block 20 Pattern & Tips

I have been just itching to make this block since I first saw it in the Moda Blockheads line-up of blocks for this round.  I knew it was going to be so pretty in Cozy Up fabrics.

Our block this week, Stop Go, is brought to us by Stacy Iest Hsu.  I have a couple tips for piecing this one so be sure to keep reading.

You will find the block pattern here.

I’ve heard many people often express that stitch & flip corners are their nemesis.  It is a quilting technique they would rather skip.  You might have a way that you love for making this sort of unit, or you might still be on the look out for just the right thing.  I have two different things you could give a whirl.

#1 First and foremost…always press before trimming away your bottom two layers.  This is my biggest tip.  It is the fastest way to see if your sewing has been accurate and to fix anything if it has not been.  Place your square on the corner, sew on the marked diagonal line, press the square to form the corner and then stop.  Make sure that all of those top square edges align perfectly with the fabrics underneath.  Do they overhang anywhere or do not meet the corner exactly?  When you flip the block over, do you see any of that top square peeking over the edges?  If you have any of these problems, you can unpick your seam, re-adjust and re-sew.

#2 You may or may not be familiar with glue basting.  Small, stitch and flip corners are a great time to utilize this method to keep that top square in place when you are sewing the diagonal line.  If the top square shifts while you are sewing, it will cause things to mis-align.  There are different products for glue basting available.  I really like the Pen + Paper Fineline Glue tips because they can be used on the Elmer’s Washable school glue.

When doing these stitch and flip corners, pop a little dot of glue in the outside corner, line up and place the top square, and then press with a hot iron to set the glue.  This keeps that top square in place with out the use of pins and allows you to be more accurate with your sewing.  This is what the glue tip looks like:

It gives a nice, precise dot of glue (or narrow line of glue) just where you’d like it.  Glue basting is an especially nice technique when you are working with small pieces that might not pin into place well.

Have fun sewing up your Stop Go block! Corey
