Sunny Patches BOM: Sunny 1941 9-Patch
Welcome to the next block release for the Sunny Patches block of the month. =) For this month, our block is the Sunny 1941 9-Patch.
If you are new to the Sunny Patches Block of the month, you will find the fabric requirements here, an introduction post here, the 1st block here, and the 2nd block here.
The Sunny 1941 9-Patch block has just a few more steps than our block last month and makes a sweet star block.
You can download the Sunny 1941 9-Patch block pattern here.
This is what all of our pretty blocks look like so if you are using Sunwashed fabrics to make your blocks (you probably have a few more HST Jelly Roll blocks made than what I have pictured):
This is what my blocks look like so far using my Beautiful Day line of fabric:
I also filmed a Sunny 1941 9-Patch Video over on my YouTube channel that you can watch here.
Here are a couple quick mock-ups of what this block could look like on it’s own. I didn’t have as much time to play around with these this month so I kept the fabrics simple using just a few prints from Sunwashed. I think it still gives you a great idea of how this block could look like in a quilt by itself. First, a straight setting:
For this second version, I set the blocks on point:
Setting blocks on point is always a fun way to add the illusion of a border without actually having to add a border.
I hope you have fun sewing up your Sunny 1941 9-Patch quilt block! If you are not yet subscribed to the Coriander Quilts YouTube channel, I’d love to have you! We also have a Coriander Quilts Facebook group where we can share our Coriander Quilts projects. Feel free to request to join if you’d like!
Have a wonderful weekend! Corey

Thanks Corey – I loved seeing the on-point mock-up. That’s something as a newer quilter I would never think of doing. I’m enjoying this sew/quilt along very much, THANK YOU!
Isn’t fun how different the blocks look on point…it’s such an easy way to change things up. =)
I love on-point designs as well. They’re really not difficult; no odd seaming, just straight sewing. There are a lot of tutorials on You Tube. You should look some up and give it a try. You won’t be sorry. Good luck!
Hi Corey,
I would really love to make the Sunny Patches BOM. I’ve secured most of the required fabrics, but I’m having a very difficult time finding the Bittie Buds Cloud fabric available anywhere. Do you know if there will be more produced?
We’d love to have you join!..there’s not a re-print planned for any of the Sunwashed fabrics.
I’m really looking forward to this mystery quilt as I know it will turn out beautiful with the fabric selections.
I have a question about the background blocks. Mine aren’t coming out to the 12.5 x 12.5. My .25 seams are right on. Horizontally they are the 13” but vertically barely 12”. Am I the only one with this problem or have others encounter this too? On paper it should work out but I’m stumped.
I would suggest checking the width of your jelly roll strips and see if you need to go scanter on your seam allowance. With pinked edges, we can either sew from the “mountain tops” or the “valleys”. I usually go from the mountain tops but I always measure before I sew. Not all jelly rolls measure exactly the same and that helps you know which way to approach sewing them.
You want to make sure that all of those background blocks measure the same. If you need to trim them a little bit smaller, you can. With the mystery blocks, they will all have a border so you can trim them slightly smaller to match the other blocks.
I had the same problem, slowly resewing them. Only have to shorten two strips on each block…for in a hurry and didn’t check tell they were all sewed…

Your fabrics and designs just make me smile! Thank you. Progress report on my scrappy Irish chain…all 25 blocks are sewn together and after one rip and fix of a “B” block that I 1/2 sewed together backwards, I’m ready to trim and start sewing blocks together. Can’t wait to get this into one lovely quilt.
Way to go on getting so close to finishing that Irish Chain!
Thank you for the 1941 nine-patch pattern! Can’t wait to make this one!

You are so generous to share your talent! You seem to be a kind, beautiful person inside…I enjoy your videos.
Hi, Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your videos. They are very informative & inspiring, I don’t do FB, and seldom check emails. Too much to do everyday and I am from the kinda antique generation 😂😂. Currently have 30,000 + unopened emails.😂😂😂 I don’t have enough time in a day to open emails.
You are GREAT, please keep up the good work. Please don’t sacrifice your husband or children for us. They are the most important treasure you have been blessed with.
❤️😃 Ricky (I am a mother of 8 & 12 grandchildren) but I am not old.
