Oh, Happy Day! Sampler Sew Along Week 10

Stars are on the agenda today for week 10 of the Oh, Happy Day! sampler sew along.  This is the first of 3 weeks of finishing instructions for our sampler quilt.

First up, you are going to need to download and print two PDF’s today.  The first one is the remaining cutting information for the next three weeks.

Cutting Information for the remaining weeks

Download the Cutting Information (as pictured above) here.

As you can see, this master cutting page, has you cutting the remaining yardage into strips.  Then, each week (including today) you will receive an additional PDF that will have you sub-cut some of the strips down in to the pieces that will be needed for that week.  A number of weeks ago, I had shared that you could go ahead and cut the (29) 1 1/2″ strips from 29152-11 so some of you may already have done that and set those aside.   While you can cut all of the pieces from the master list right away in preparation for the upcoming weeks, I do have one alternate piecing option for today so keep reading.

The pieces listed under “patchwork border” should be cut from your leftover fat eighth bundle yardage.  Cut a nice variety of prints.

Star Blocks PDF

The second PDF you will need to print today is for the Star blocks we will be making.

Download the Star Block Information here.

In this PDF, you will find the strips that you need to sub-cut from the master cutting list (in this case, you can see that you are sub-cutting B,C, & D strips from the master cutting list into smaller pieces).  The second page in this PDF covers the piecing/pressing information.

On page 1 of the Star Block PDF, you will notice an additional “note” at the bottom of the page.  If you wish, you can skip piecing the 16 star blocks for this week, and instead cut (16) 4 1/2 squares (of 29158-17) to use in place of the stars.  The stars are beautiful in this setting but I wanted to offer an alternate option for those of you who might be pressed for time or who might not wish to make them for whatever reason.  I mentioned this in the video I shared today but wanted to make sure and mention it again here since we have newer sewists sewing along.  If  you have kept up with the blocks each week, these stars, even though they are 4 1/2″, shouldn’t feel tricky for you.  Some of the blocks we made throughout the sew-along had trickier intersections or piecing techniques than the stars, even with their smaller size.

If you opt to skip the stars and use the squares, you will need 7 less (B) strips than the master list calls for.

YouTube Video available today.

Over on my YouTube channel, I shared a video today and I’ve talked in detail about the cutting information as well as a tutorial for piecing the blocks.  You can find the video here.

If  you are new here and unfamiliar with this sew along, you can read more about it here.

Have fun sewing up your star blocks! Corey

Oh, yeah!!! I love a setting that is more than sashing strips and cornerstone blocks, those also make lovely quilts – but, I just LOVE a setting that adds lots more visual interest!! Thank you Corey, this sewalong has been so enjoyable from the very beginning.

Corey, I love the sweatshirt you were wearing with the Ohio Star. Did you make it or is there a source for the one in this video and some of the others you’ve worn recently? Also, is there another Christmas line of fabrics in your future plans? I really wanted Holliberry and had asked for it for Christmas, the quilt shop talked my husband in to buying another line that was similar that year. Spending my day using up scraps from a gifted Beautiful Day quilt for a second quilt – not sure what it will look like yet, leftover HSTs may just turn into pinwheels, but I’m keeping this one.

Thank you Brenda! The sweatshirt in today’s video was one I made for myself and I don’t have it for sale. All of the other sweatshirts are for sale and you’ll find direct links to the shops I purchased from in the comments below each video. And yes, I’m sure there will be another holiday line at some point!

Hi Corey! I really enjoyed the Happy Day’s SewAlong. I’m almost caught up! Can you tell me if you have another sew along starting in January 2023! Thank You!

I like your sweatshirt as well and I like all your fabrics too….

I have learned so much from this sew a long. Thank you for the great tips along the way. I’m excited to see this come together!

My first sew along with you! I love your quilts so I decided to join in. I have thoroughly enjoyed it! I’m doing 2 color ways, Buttercup & Slate and teals, tans, and navy’s from my sizeable stash. Feeling accomplished- just finished the 16 star blocks for each, and I’m seeing too many 1 1/2 inch squares float before my eyes! Mystery quilts are so much fun! Also love that hoodie!

Corey, this has been a fantastic sew-along! Your videos are what really kept me going through the learning process, and I am so excited to have my 1st pieced quilt finish on the horizon! I’m making 2 – one for me and one for my daughter for Christmas. I am not going to do the stars, but I was thinking that “snowballing” 2 opposite corners on the gray squares would add some interest to the cornerstones but not require quite as much time. What do you think?

    • Corey says:

I’m so glad you’ve been enjoying it Lisa! And you’ve stayed caught up and you’re making two! Yes, snowballs would be cute…I would probably say to wait until after you see Saturday’s blocks because that would probably help you to know the size you’d want to do your corners at.

How do I purchase the fabric for the sew along. Love Beauiful day and Oh Happy Day!

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
